Best Vegetables to Grow in May in Kerala

According to Kerala’s climate, May is one of the most suitable months for vegetable cultivation. Since this period comes just before the monsoon season (Edavappathi), sowing seeds during May helps plants establish strong growth as the rains begin.

Vegetables Suitable for Cultivation in May

1. Bean Varieties

Beans are among the most suitable crops for May cultivation.

  • Yard Long Beans (Achinga Payar): Can be sown before the monsoon starts.
  • Bush Beans: Grow easily with minimal care.

2. Creeper Vegetables for the Rainy Season

Preparing raised beds before the rains helps the vines spread and climb properly on supports or trellises.

Suitable varieties include:

  • Bitter Gourd
  • Snake Gourd
  • Bottle Gourd
  • Ridge Gourd
  • Ivy Gourd

3. Ground-Spreading Vegetables

  • Pumpkin: Grows very well during the rainy season.
  • Ash Gourd: May is an ideal time for sowing seeds.

4. Daily Use Vegetables

Okra (Ladies Finger)

During the rainy season, pest attacks are comparatively lower in okra cultivation.

Chilli

Bird’s Eye Chilli and common chilli varieties can be transplanted during this period.

Brinjal (Eggplant)

Seedlings prepared earlier can be transplanted in May.

5. Tuber Crops

Planting tuber crops with the arrival of the first rains improves yield significantly.

Suitable crops include:

  • Colocasia (Taro)
  • Elephant Foot Yam
  • Greater Yam
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric

Mid-May is considered the best time for planting ginger and turmeric.

Important Cultivation Tips

Proper Drainage

Before the monsoon begins, ensure proper drainage channels are prepared to prevent water stagnation around the plants.

Seed Treatment

Before sowing, seeds can be soaked for some time in a Pseudomonas solution to improve disease resistance.

Soil Preparation

To reduce soil acidity, lightly apply any one of the following:

  • Dolomite
  • Lime
  • Wood ash

If there is no rain, water the soil for about seven days after application.

For organic farming, mix the following bio-agents:

  • Pseudomonas
  • VAM
  • Trichoderma
  • Beauveria

Mix approximately 250 grams of these bio-inputs with 10 kg of cow dung powder or compost and apply as basal manure or around the base of plants.

Shade Protection

If the summer heat is intense, provide temporary shade for young seedlings.

Organic Pest Control

For organic farming, start spraying organic pesticides immediately after germination or transplanting. Mix the pesticide with a natural sticking agent and spray once every eight days, preferably:

  • Early morning
    OR
  • After 3 PM in the evening
